Randy Wooten believes that as far as gangster movies go, it’s pretty hard to top “The Godfather.” However, over the decades, other incredible films have added to the genre, some of which even rival “The Godfather” in terms of filmmaking.

For this blog post, Randy Wooten shares three gangster movies that everyone should put on their playlist.

Boyz n the Hood (1991) dir. John Singleton

The late John Singleton directed one of the most iconic and critically-praised gangster films in history with his 1991 magnum opus, “Boyz n the Hood.” The film featured an ensemble cast that included Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube, Angela Basset, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the lead role. And many audiences felt like “Boyz n the Hood” was and still is the greatest African American film of its kind.

Casino (1995) dir. Martin Scorsese

While “Goodfellas” has for decades taken all the glory, Martin Scorsese’s next gangster film “Casino” deserves just as much respect. In “Casino,” Scorsese takes what made “Goodfellas” a huge success and improves on it, much like what Francis Ford Coppola did with “The Godfather Part II.”

Donnie Brasco (1997) dir. Mike Newell

Back in 1997, versatile director Mike Newell called the shots for what would arguably be his greatest directing achievement, “Donnie Brasco.” Based on the story of FBI agent Joseph Pistone, who goes undercover to infiltrate the Bonanno crime family in New York City. The movie boasts amazing performances all around, most especially from its two leads, Johnny Depp and Al Pacino.
