Despite events taking place left and right, the threat of COVID-19 remains real. In most countries, industries are reopening and transitioning to the new normal. The film industry has resumed production and has even rescheduled a few festivals to later dates. Among the brave events is the Venice Film Festival.

Film fan Randy Wooten was among those who were pleased and amazed as to how the Venice Film Festival was organized. Down to the last minute, organizers, fans, and jury members were unsure whether the event would push through or not. The most astonishing thing that the organizers pulled off was the audience turnout. In a COVID-19-stricken world, it’s difficult to expect people to leave their homes, much more attend a public gathering.

Attendees were quick to note that the festival felt safe and relaxed despite the health issues. President of the Golden Lion jury Cate Blanchett, jury members, and other participants were in bright disposition throughout the festival. Heavy-hitters from the film industry such as Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Pedro Almodovar, and Vanessa Kirby were also present.

Pedro Almodovar and Blanchett believe that the streaming option for films is a conversation that must be had, notes Randy Wooten. For the legendary Spanish director, cities and towns may lose their charm and culture should on-demand streaming services replace theaters. Blanchett believes that the six-month cinema lockdown period is a talk that must be started and resolved. The 2020 Venice Film Festival stood firm on its belief that the shared experience and the connection between a film and a spectator are significant elements of the industry.
